&lt;b&gt;SANITATION and HEALTH INSURANCE&lt;/b&gt; 
&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;

&lt;b&gt;Objective&lt;/b&gt;: To enable 500,00 households in India to obtain loans for construction of sanitation facilities in order to improve their health situation.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;b&gt;Request&lt;/b&gt;: Grant financing to lower interest rates of sanitation loans.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;Project description&lt;/b&gt;: WASTE together with the Indian insurance company TATA-AIG, the Dutch financial group SNS-REAAL and the Indian micro-credit organisation BISWA will introduce sanitation loans for villagers, and monitor effects of the loans through health insurance. TATA -AIG and BISWA have committed themselves to the project.

WASTE is planning an E-discussion on WEEE (Waste Electrical Electronic Equipment) &amp;amp; Export in the period &lt;i&gt;October - November 2006&lt;/i&gt;. 
&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;
Points of discussion include: 
&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;ul&gt;

&lt;li&gt;Export of WEEE from high- to low-income countries and &lt;/li&gt;

&lt;li&gt;Re-use, repair, recycling and safe end-of-life management of WEEE. &lt;/li&gt;

&lt;/ul&gt;

&lt;p&gt;
 Aiming at knowledge sharing, WASTE welcomes stakeholders with various backgrounds to participate in discussion, from both South and North.

Hygiene behaviour must be taught at the same time as facilities are constructed so that these behaviours can be put into practice. It is the use of technical facilities and the related appropriate hygiene behaviour of people that provide health benefits. At school, hygiene education aims to promote those practices that will help prevent water and sanitation-related diseases.

To achieve this change people first of all need to see the benefit of ecological sanitation.

We think ecological sanitation offers a solution for many schools in developing countries. Schools in developing countries often have scarce water, money and food resources. Ecological systems require a minimum of water. Ecological sanitation saves at least 20/40 % of its domestic water consumption. Adding water saving devices or recycling grey water makes it even possible to save more water. After filtration, grey water can be used for irrigation, groundwater recharge or even for production of portable water.

It is an approach that seeks to protect the human health, prevents pollution of the environment, reduces the use of water in sanitation systems and recycles nutrients to help to reduce the need for artificial fertilizer in agriculture. This recycling of nutrients helps to achieve food security.

Conventional waste water systems ask for much water, a costly infrastructure and are high maintenance. As in many developing countries water and money are scarce. Therefore sewerage is often lacking and not functioning. Collected sewage is rarely treated. The wastewater is polluting the direct environment of towns and schools and can be a source of disease carrying organisms which endangers the lives of children. Finally, as human excreta contains useful nutrients that can be used as fertilizer wastes natural resources and nutrients and ignores that human excreta is a valuable resource. Also schools have limited resources and a sewer system is not a feasible option.

Going to school in a clean and healthy school environment is every child&apos;s right. Many children in developing countries, however, do not have access to safe and clean sanitation facilities on school. Schools too often suffer from non-existent or insufficient sanitation and hand-washing facilities. Schools are not safe for children due to neglect of the operation and maintenance of facilities. Latrines are not always adapted to the needs of children, in particular, girls. Schools cope with broken, dirty, unsafe and even lack of sanitation and hand washing facilities. Latrines are padlocked because children are not trusted to use them properly.
