Education

The success of a project is not determined by the number of latrines constructed. Hygiene behaviour must be taught at the same time as facilities are constructed so that these behaviours can be put into practice. It is the use of technical facilities and the related appropriate hygiene behaviour of people that provide health benefits. At school, hygiene education aims to promote those practices that will help prevent water and sanitation-related diseases.

Installation of ecological toilets can go hand in hand with training on agriculture, environment and waste management. Since urine can be used as fertilizer it is good that children know more about the process of composting.
Compost can be used for agricultural purposes. Reuse of excreta can be broadened to reuse and separation of waste products in general.
Ecological sanitation is part of a broader vision of bringing the society in balance with nature to ensure a more sustainable future. It is a means to save scarce resources as phosphor and water and a means which does not pollute the environment.
