Ecological sanitation
Ecological sanitation is based on the idea that urine, faeces and water are resources in an ecological loop. It is an approach that seeks to protect the human health, prevents pollution of the environment, reduces the use of water in sanitation systems and recycles nutrients to help to reduce the need for artificial fertilizer in agriculture. This recycling of nutrients helps to achieve food security.
Ecological sanitation is flexible, in such that it can be centralized or decentralized, waterborne or dry sanitation and high tech or low tech solutions. By considering a much larger range of options, optimal economic solutions can be developed for each particular situation.
