Rioned Foundation for Information and Resources for sewerage in the Netherlands

RIONED foundation focuses on public sewerage facilities. The foundation collaborates with institutes in the Netherlands and abroad, and presents ideas, advice and opinions in various commissions and consultative forums.

RIONED Foundation supplies a number of products and services, including:

  • ‘Leidraad Riolering’ (Sewerage Guidelines) is a compilation of technical, legal and managerial information and knowledge on all aspects of sewerage, published in the form of a loose-leaf reference work. ‘Leidraad’ is the standard reference work of its kind in the Netherlands.
  • Reports: results of research that deserves the attention of a wider audience.
  • Newsletter: appears four times per year and contains news for those involved in sewerage.
  • Exchange of know-how and experience: the prime opportunity for this activity is the annual RIONED day, when the Dutch sewerage community comes together.
  • RIONED organises conferences, workshops and communities of practice.
  • RIONED offers courses and provides information and documentation.

Furthermore, RIONED plays an active role in establishing technical standards. and is active in research. The research commissioned by RIONED focuses on urban drainage systems and finding new cost-effective methods and techniques for asset management.
RIONED Foundation also supports research on underground space and benchmarking.

RIONED Foundation promotes public awareness on the need for user-friendly sewerage as a basic requirement for public health and a clean environment. RIONED has exhibition material showing what happens underground after the bath plug is pulled out or the toilet is flushed. This is available to municipal and other public bodies.
‘Riool in Cijfers’ (Sewerage Statistics; in dutch) contains a wealth of statistical information on the approximately 87,000 kilometres of the Dutch sewerage system.
