At the End of the Pipe?
Programme public debate "are we connected?"
In January and February 2005, three meetings were held on the theme of sanitation and integrated sustainable urban planning. During these meetings, participants from various disciplines were encouraged to look abroad and take notice of new developments. After which they discussed the sustainability of our current sanitation systems and wether there are more feasible and efficient approaches now and in the future.
The public debate on 3 March concluded this series of meetings. It elaborated on the ideas and messages that were gathered, and formulated concrete input for the 13th session of the Commission for Sustainable Development (CSD) in April 2005 in New York.
The input of the meetings and the results of the public debate can be found hereunder:

Proceedings At the End of the Pipe

The proceedings reflect the contents of the informal discussion meetings, as well as the
public debate and provide reference material on the progress towards sustainable sanitation
approaches within the context of integrated urban planning. The last chapter analyses the
extent to which this material influenced both interim and final statements of the CSD-13
meeting. Finally, speaker presentations and participant lists for all four programme meetings
can be found in the Annexes to the current proceedings.

The question is whether current sanitation practices adequately deal with the problem of handling human excreta. Are the dominant end-of-the-pipeline or down the pit sanitation options still the best and only options available to us?
This leaflet is handed out during the CSD 13 in the Sanitation Group and offers a starting point for discussion on sanitation paradigms.
