EcoSan at WASTE
Ecological Sanitation covers a wide range of techniques for toilet design and the collection and treatment of urine and faeces. Because it includes low- as well as high-tech solutions for rural and urban settings and it allows for central and/or decentralised, dry and waterborne sanitation, solutions can be developed for each specific situation.
Ecological Sanitation techniques available on the market include toilet designs ranging from low-flush- to dry urine-separating toilets that separate urine and faeces at source. Because these techniques reduce large quantities of black water, it reduces the need for pipelines that is regarded as one of the most expensive part of the conventional sewer system. Therefore, the collection techniques covered by Ecological Sanitation range from small-scale sewer systems to systems based on logistics, such as the collection by tankers and trucks.
The Ecological Sanitation department of WASTE has several alliances with other organisations involved in Ecological Sanitation and can make use of the networks of WASTE and these alliances.
WASTE is organising backstopping support from Dutch, as well as international scientific institutions.
