Collection of Household Excreta - the operation of services in urban low-income neighbourhoods Urban Waste Series 6
Pit and bucket latrines are commonly used in many African and Asian cities. Hence the collection and disposal of human excreta can present a serious sanitation issue. Case studies from Dar Es Salaam in Tanzania, Ghaziabad in India, Accra in Ghana and Yichang in China are presented looking at how human excreta collection works in practice.

Community Participation in Waste Management, Experiences of a pilot project in Bangalore India The objective of the project was to develop, implement and evaluate a community managed environmentally friendly and viable waste management system covering one ward of the city of Bangalore (Nagapura). The plan would include the various steps from collection through storage and disposal of different types of solid waste. This document reflects the experiences of this project.

Maintenance of established infrastructure and services is a major problem in developing countries nowadays. In the water supply sector, community participation and management have been identified as possible solutions to maintenance problems. A solid waste management system is in fact a continuous maintenance system, which always requires community participation.
