Schools in India
School sanitation projects in India
Together with WASTE, FODRA has initiated an ecological sanitation school project in Delhi which is financed by CORDAID. Half a year ago an elementary school in Delhi reconstructed existing urinals into ecological toilets. They have separate urinal facilities for girls and boys. The urine collected in the urinals is recycled. Faeces are still collected in a septic tank. The project is a success and they want to introduce the same system in other schools in Delhi.
Doddabellapur is a upgraded slum area in Delhi. Our partner organisation Mithri started together with a school, where the issue programme has pilots for ecological sanitation, an ecosan school programme. Together with input from the children two ecological diversion toilet were built. The toilets are cleaned and maintained by the school children themselves.Only urine is recycled because in India some laws prohibit the use of faeces.
The school has developed a garden where the urine is tested as fertilizer. They separated the garden into four fields. One field is fertilised with nothing, the other with artificial fertilizer and the final two fields with different quantities of urine. The toilets and the garden were a reason for this school to also create an educational programme on hygiene, waste management and the environment.
In Musini our partner organisation SCOPE together with WASTE is currently initiating an ecological school. Plans are being made to reconstruct a existing school into a school where everything is about ecology. They are thinking for example of installing solar panels, recycling of waste products and building of ecological toilets. This project is just starting and still is looking for supporting funds.
